ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
Thanksgiving Weather Forcast

In the pre-Thanksgiving rush, we have received an early weather report from our in-house weather reporters. This is one that you should be sure to e-mail your Mom.

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.

During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.

A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.

Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

We will be closed on Thursday, November 25th for Thanksgiving Day.

Until we meet again may your days be pieceful!

Back from Quilt Market!

November 15th, 2007

Fall Quilt Market was held the end of October in Houston and we came home inspired and ready to keep you quilting for fun months to come. We found really neat products and lots of fabric while we were there. Here are a couple of our favorites:

End the frustration of bobbins running out in mid-project! With the touch of a button, SideWinderTM, The Portable Bobbin WinderTM. Quickly and easily fills bobbins without having to un-thread the sewing machine. The SideWinder’s compact size means it fits anywhere, and since it runs on batteries or with a power cord, the SideWinder can be used anywhere—in class, on location, or at home! For sewing, quilting or crafting, let the SideWinder keep your creativity flowing! **Please note that the SideWinder works with most, but not all, bobbins. At this time, we have identified the following machines that have bobbins that do not fit on the SideWinder:Singer Centaur IITM, Singer FuturaTM, Husqvarna Viking sewing/quilting machines that take bobbin 412 56 15-45 (green), 412 09 75-45 or 412 06 12-45, or the Pfaff Creative Vision. Order yours today!

The Yo-Yo Animal patterns are just wonderful. Featured are an elephant, a puppy, and a bear. These cute little dolls are made using large yo-yo’s. We recommend using the extra large yo-yo maker from Clover and you will have all of them you need in a snap. These would be great stocking stuffers and is a great project to take along when you travel or need a project to do by hand.

Just FYI…the Patchwork Party Fall Edition is drawing to a close. So, if you have not purchased all 12 blocks, you need to do so before November 30. Our finishing kit is still available and on December 1 we will draw names from those who have purchased our finishing kit for a set of pillow shams and a set of Euro shams to match our project. You could just be the lucky winner!

Watch for our weekly Hot Flashes and we will post more interesting new products as they are received. It’s going to be a great year for quilting!

Until we meet again, may your days be pieceful!

A Dear Jane Story…

November 8th, 2007

At Stitchin’ Heaven, we have run a Dear Jane BOM program since 2004. The program is wonderful, lasts for 24 months, and our customers truly love it. I have been fortunate to see a finished project from one of the members of our original group, Nancy Ewell from Seattle:
Here is a picture of Nancy’s finished Dear Jane quilt and what she has to say about the experience:

I became interested in the DJ quilt project because there were so many blocks – all different – to try out. In a lifetime, I would never have tried all of these without the quilt project. The BOM project appealed tome because there was not too much at once to get discouraged. After thefirst packet of fabric arrived with all of the beauty of the repros, I could hardly wait for the arrival of each BOM. The service, information and beautiful fabrics from Stitchin’ Heaven has been outstanding. The favorite part of making the quilt was the discussion each week with my quilt group (I had talked one other friend in the group to also do DJ) and we had such fun as the quilt grew and comparing all of the blocks. I did make many of the blocks when my weekly quilt group met where I could do the hand sewing. The small blocks are a perfect take along for hand work. There were constantlynew challenges and DJ certainly improved my skills in making small piecesfit together both by hand and by machine. I also tried out many techniquesfor appliqué that would not have happened without DJ. There are many waysto put together the quilt with piecing or appliqué and the instructions gavegood hints (sometimes, I just did it my way). Making the DJ with friends isa definite plus. It is such fun to compare what we are doing and also otherpeople do join and come along. One friend in our quilt group got caught upin our fun and decided to make a small DJ. She just chose the blocks thatshe liked best and made a wall hanging which, of course, was completed muchfaster than mine.

I like trying all kinds of techniques although appliqué somehow appears morethan anything else. I mostly make bed size quilts as we have 4 children and9 grandchildren who have lots of requests through the years. I startedquilting in 1979 when we were transferred to Boston, Mass. I saw a quiltbeing made at a Christmas bazaar and was immediately hooked. Before that Ihad been a weaver for over 25 years and had sewed since I was a little girl.I made clothes, costumes, gifts, etc. through the years until quilting tookover, the children were grown and I had more time for this fabulous craft. My next project is a picture quilt for my granddaughter who is graduatingfrom college. She is choosing all of the pictures through her growing upyears) and we are choosing the fabric together and we will work out thedesign together. I have taken quilt classes through the years to learn newtechniques and to study under well known teachers. These are great forlearning, making new friends and having lots of fun.

Quilters are wonderful and generous caring people. My husband and I are now retired, we both do allot of volunteer work, spendtime with our families and travel. I make many small quilts for the preemieunit of one of our hospitals (this is part of a long ongoing project of QA -my large quilt group of 500 people.) Also make quilts for a church whichare single bed size. I use all left over fabrics from projects for thesequilts plus others added from my stash.”

At Stitchin’ Heaven we are in the process of putting together our next Dear Jane program to begin in January. Go to the website for additional information and to join! Until we meet again, may your days be pieceful!
