Who’s Your Favorite Designer?
It’s a new week, sorry I’m a day late, but I have our winner for last week’s Quilty Question!
Congratulations, Gretchen!
Gretchen is our random winner for our weekly Quilty Question!
I’ve really been enjoying getting to know you all through these questions. They’re quite inspiring, humorous and informative. Thank you all!
This week’s Quilty Question is: Who is your absolute favorite quilt designer?
This is kind of a tough one. I know for me it is. I can name a few, although, I think I can narrow it down to my favorite. How about you? Please leave a comment, I’m anxious to hear what you have to answer with. Oh, and of course, you must comment for your chance to win our weekly $25 Stitchin’ Heaven Gift Card!
Hope you are all having a wonderful week so far!

That’s really hard! I guess my 2 favorites are April Cornell and Kaffe Fassett. Although I guess I need to mention Paula Nedelstern too. LOL!
November 10th, 2009 | #
Favorite designer? Kafee Fasset! When I began quilting 4 years ago I couldn’t fathom putting more than one print in a quilt never mind side by side. KF cured me of that in a big way.

Lori Smith is one of my favorite designers. She creates new from old. Her fabric choices are of such a range that she appeals to the collector in all of us. Which means she helps us use your stash…good for the quilter. And she inspires us to buy new…good for the shop owners. She is an all around excellent choice.

November 10th, 2009 | #
Bonnie Hunter! Hands Down Favorite! Quilting is such precise sewing that it needs away to be free. Bonnie provides that with her just pulling strips out of a drawer to see what happens. She really made me love quilting.
November 10th, 2009 | #
My very favorite quilt designer is BONNIE HUNTER!!! She has some really fabulous designs; most can be scrappy — using up some stash. She deserves to be the #1 designer.

Bonnie Hunter. She has taught me to use different colors and make scrappy quilts. The Greatest!
November 10th, 2009 | #
Looks like lots of others got here before me to vote for my favorite quilt designer, BONNIE HUNTER at Quiltville.com Bonnie’s quilts don’t require a lot of expensive fabric, and they don’t require a great eye for color. Since I don’t have those 2 things, Bonnie’s designs are perfect for me. I love working with all those little pieces of scraps!
November 10th, 2009 | #
Even though there are many national/international quilters, the ones that have influenced me the most are local quilt shop teachers from the 90’s….Deb Otto from the former Quilting, Etc. in Irving and Carol Staehle from the former Abram Quilt House in Arlington. Several patterns they developed for quilt classes, I have repeated or made variations of and learned so many tips and tricks that I have applied to many other patterns.
November 10th, 2009 | #
My favorite designer is Bonnie Hunter, from Quiltville. She has shown us how to do things in small steps to the final outcome of truly amazing scrappy quilts and all from our ever growing stash.
November 10th, 2009 | #
My favorite designer if Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville. She makes the directions so easy to understand and read, and there isn’t any of her mysterys that I don’t like. I love the scrappy look and she does a super job of designing them.
November 10th, 2009 | #
like many of the other posters, My favorite designer uses what we all have in our stash… scraps… Her name is Bonnie Hunter, and she has been publishing free patterns on her website http://www.quiltville.com for many years and sharing them with anyone who is interested! And she has an awesome trunk show too! Makes you want to go home and organize your fabrics!
November 10th, 2009 | #

November 10th, 2009 | #
bonnie hunter, hands down! she’s taken the fear out of making a quilt with small pieces while making it fun to boot. planned or scrappy, her patterns work both ways…but i’m quickly falling in love with scrappy.
November 10th, 2009 | #
No question who is my favorite, Bonnie Hunter! She’s at the top of my list with lots of spaces underneath.
November 11th, 2009 | #
After making hundreds of quilts, I have to admit that I love Maryellen Hopkins and Eleanor Burns for many many years, BUT, now that I have found Bonnie Hunter and have been sewing her designs, there is no denying that Bonnie is the Queen of all things scrappy in quilts. No one can touch her in designing beautiful quilts with such ease and with such explicit tutorials. I am in the middle of the fifth Bonnie Hunter quilt and enjoying my life because of all she has shared with me.
November 11th, 2009 | #
I have several different favorites who all have different specialties, but hands down, when I want to enjoy the comforting feeling of working on my quilts I turn to Bonnie Hunter’s designs. I love the homey feel of working with scraps and re-purposed clothing, and I love the challenge of working with many small pieces with such wonderful easy-to-follow directions.
November 11th, 2009 | #
As a scrappy quilter I’ll vote for Bonnie Hunter at quiltville.com for her wonderful quilts and mysterys and also Cynthia at iowastarquilts.com who designs completely scrappy mysterys.

My favorite quilt designer is Marcia Hohn of quilterscache.com She has hundreds of blocks and quilt settings on her website. I usually visit her site first if I need inspiration.
My second favorite is Bonnie K. Hunter of quiltville.com
November 11th, 2009 | #
Wow! Tough question, but if I look at quilts I’ve actually made, the obvious answer is Bonnie Hunter. Not only have I been doing her scrappy mysteries, but have found myself looking at her patterns when I buy new fabric.
November 11th, 2009 | #
I love the patterns from Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill. I love the fabric reproductions of Jo Morton.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Soooo many good ones but Bonnie Hunter is great and my favorite.
November 11th, 2009 | #
My favorite designer is Terry Atkinson. Her patterns are well written and easy to follow! I also have taken classes from Terry and she is a wonderful teacher. Very easy going and FUNNY!

November 11th, 2009 | #
I absolutely love Bonnie Hunter’s designs and have made several of her quilts. A close second would be Judy Martin.
November 11th, 2009 | #
My favorite designer is Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville. She has made it possible for me to make a quilt and not be overwhelmed. Having also met her, I can truly say she is as warm as her quilts.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Paula Barnes from Bonnie Blue Quilts. I love old looking Civil War type quilts like her patterns.
November 11th, 2009 | #
It sounds like Bonnie Hunter should get the $25 card this week instead of one of us. Just kidding. She is awesome!
November 11th, 2009 | #
With out a doubt Jane Stickle. In one amazing quilt she designed 225 blocks and triangles. With the addition of solid triangles in the outer border she included 285 fabrics in this wonderful “scrap quilt”
November 11th, 2009 | #
I love many styles of quilts and admire many designers but McKenna Ryan’s quilts are just magic to me. Jinny Beyer’s quilts are also just awe inspiring. Beth Ferrier’s quilts are fun and she is great fun as well. Of course once I start the names keep rising to the top Sharon Schamber, Karen Combs, Maggie Walker…. the list goes on. LOL
November 11th, 2009 | #
Kaffe Fassett. No question about it.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Bonnie Hunter gets my vote.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Bonnie Hunter with out a doubt.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Love Pat Sloan and Bonnie Hunter! I don’t really have any favorites because some quilts and designs just “jump” at me and I love them!
November 11th, 2009 | #
My favorite fabric designers would have to be Kaffe Fassett and Jason Yenter hands down.
Pattern designers would have to include Terry Atkinson and the gals at Possibilities. Where would we be without the Yellow Brick Road? How many new quilters have used that pattern to gain confidence? Both design houses have well designed patterns for newbies to advanced.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Eleanor Burns is my hero!
November 11th, 2009 | #
Lynn sounds like a quilter that I could enjoy working next to. I would not go near the “wagon” that everyone else seems to be fighting for room to get on. I do march to a different drummer. Scrap quilts I can do myself. For delicious designs that I have to study and absorb slowly — my vote goes to Jinny Beyer. I have drooled over and worked with her border prints since the early 80’s. I have long used her “Quilter’s Album of Blocks & Borders” for reference and have been asking myself the question why would I need her newest book “A Quilter’S Album of Patchwork Patterns”. Just a couple of days ago I had the opportunity to flip the pages of her new book and I am now doing my Scrooge act ‘counting my pennies’ to buy it. I must have it.
I am on Jinny’s newsletter mailing list. I do admire McKenna Ryan’s work, it is knock-you-dead gorgeous in pictures, but even more so to actually see one made up, however it has not made it to the point of parting me from my money.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Although there are a lot of good designers out there, I think Bonnie Hunter has the best designs, is the most generous with her designs. I also like Judy Martin but Bonnie Hunter is out there in front!
November 11th, 2009 | #
Right now, my favorite is Lori Smith and her scrappy sampler quilt designs. Big plus is the fact that she has so many patterns that don’t require making the same block over and over, and also many of her designs combine piecing and applique. while most of her patterns are done in repro fabrics – you could sure use other style fabrics in most of them. If you had asked the same question a few +/- years ago, would have been a different answer, so I am sure that if you were to ask the same questions again a few +/- years from now you might also get a different answer.
November 11th, 2009 | #
My current fave is Judy Martin from Judy Martin’s Log Cabin book. I love her color play with the familiar pattern and how her simple tweaks allow the pattern to morph and still be timeless.
November 11th, 2009 | #
I like anyone new to designing like Mabeth
Oxenreider. To me as a quilter she is great!
I still think of myself as new, after 12yrs.
Also like Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill, like her ideas, Also am a fan of Bonnie Hunter. Happy
Quilting!
November 11th, 2009 | #
For piecing, hand sown my favorite is Bonnie Hunter. I love how she’s can break down a pattern so that it’s easy enough for anyone to do, but it looks so intricate and gorgeous when it’s done. For applique, I like Nancy Halvorsen. Her stuff just looks cute and fun.
November 11th, 2009 | #
Marcia Hohn and Bonnie Hunter are so “user friendly” and have contributed so much to all quilters, especially in these tight economic times. They aren’t all about the money as so many others are. Therefore, they are MY favorites.

My “favorite quilt designer” would have to be Gwen Marston http://gwenmarston.com/, who is the ultimate “Liberated Quilter”. She changed my quilting life a few years ago when I became so burdened with perfect, pointed stars
that I couldn’t move forward. She really liberated me, and I’ve grown to love her whimsy.
November 12th, 2009 | #
I just love Debby Maddy (sp?) I took a couple of my quilts to the Tyler Quilt Show a couple years ago…and low & behold she was actually the lecturer that year!!! I was so surprised to see her there, knowing that I had made 2 quilts from her patterns. Even though I didn’t get a ribbon….it didn’t matter…she saw “my” quilts made from her pattern!!!
