Who’s Your Favorite Designer?

November 10th, 2009

It’s a new week, sorry I’m a day late, but I have our winner for last week’s Quilty Question!

Congratulations, Gretchen!

GiftCard

Gretchen is our random winner for our weekly Quilty Question!

I’ve really been enjoying getting to know you all through these questions.  They’re quite inspiring, humorous and informative.   Thank you all!

This week’s Quilty Question is: Who is your absolute favorite quilt designer?

This is kind of a tough one. I know for me it is.  I can name a few, although, I think I can narrow it down to my favorite.  How about you? Please leave a comment, I’m anxious to hear what you have to answer with.  Oh, and of course, you must comment for your chance to win our weekly $25 Stitchin’ Heaven Gift Card!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week so far!

Favorite designer? Kafee Fasset! When I began quilting 4 years ago I couldn’t fathom putting more than one print in a quilt never mind side by side. KF cured me of that in a big way.

Looks like lots of others got here before me to vote for my favorite quilt designer, BONNIE HUNTER at Quiltville.com Bonnie’s quilts don’t require a lot of expensive fabric, and they don’t require a great eye for color. Since I don’t have those 2 things, Bonnie’s designs are perfect for me. I love working with all those little pieces of scraps!

    November 10th, 2009 | #

  36. Jane W. says

Even though there are many national/international quilters, the ones that have influenced me the most are local quilt shop teachers from the 90’s….Deb Otto from the former Quilting, Etc. in Irving and Carol Staehle from the former Abram Quilt House in Arlington. Several patterns they developed for quilt classes, I have repeated or made variations of and learned so many tips and tricks that I have applied to many other patterns.

After making hundreds of quilts, I have to admit that I love Maryellen Hopkins and Eleanor Burns for many many years, BUT, now that I have found Bonnie Hunter and have been sewing her designs, there is no denying that Bonnie is the Queen of all things scrappy in quilts. No one can touch her in designing beautiful quilts with such ease and with such explicit tutorials. I am in the middle of the fifth Bonnie Hunter quilt and enjoying my life because of all she has shared with me.

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  71. Karen Summers says

My favorite fabric designers would have to be Kaffe Fassett and Jason Yenter hands down.
Pattern designers would have to include Terry Atkinson and the gals at Possibilities. Where would we be without the Yellow Brick Road? How many new quilters have used that pattern to gain confidence? Both design houses have well designed patterns for newbies to advanced.

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  72. Laura Deaver says

    Eleanor Burns is my hero!

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  73. Laurel says

Lynn sounds like a quilter that I could enjoy working next to. I would not go near the “wagon” that everyone else seems to be fighting for room to get on. I do march to a different drummer. Scrap quilts I can do myself. For delicious designs that I have to study and absorb slowly — my vote goes to Jinny Beyer. I have drooled over and worked with her border prints since the early 80’s. I have long used her “Quilter’s Album of Blocks & Borders” for reference and have been asking myself the question why would I need her newest book “A Quilter’S Album of Patchwork Patterns”. Just a couple of days ago I had the opportunity to flip the pages of her new book and I am now doing my Scrooge act ‘counting my pennies’ to buy it. I must have it. I am on Jinny’s newsletter mailing list. I do admire McKenna Ryan’s work, it is knock-you-dead gorgeous in pictures, but even more so to actually see one made up, however it has not made it to the point of parting me from my money.

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  74. BJ Malecha says

Although there are a lot of good designers out there, I think Bonnie Hunter has the best designs, is the most generous with her designs. I also like Judy Martin but Bonnie Hunter is out there in front!

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  75. Jan Graziano says

Right now, my favorite is Lori Smith and her scrappy sampler quilt designs. Big plus is the fact that she has so many patterns that don’t require making the same block over and over, and also many of her designs combine piecing and applique. while most of her patterns are done in repro fabrics – you could sure use other style fabrics in most of them. If you had asked the same question a few +/- years ago, would have been a different answer, so I am sure that if you were to ask the same questions again a few +/- years from now you might also get a different answer.

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  76. Jennifer P says

My current fave is Judy Martin from Judy Martin’s Log Cabin book. I love her color play with the familiar pattern and how her simple tweaks allow the pattern to morph and still be timeless.

For piecing, hand sown my favorite is Bonnie Hunter. I love how she’s can break down a pattern so that it’s easy enough for anyone to do, but it looks so intricate and gorgeous when it’s done. For applique, I like Nancy Halvorsen. Her stuff just looks cute and fun.

    November 11th, 2009 | #

  79. tqualls says

Marcia Hohn and Bonnie Hunter are so “user friendly” and have contributed so much to all quilters, especially in these tight economic times. They aren’t all about the money as so many others are. Therefore, they are MY favorites.

She changed my quilting life a few years ago when I became so burdened with perfect, pointed stars  that I couldn’t move forward. She really liberated me, and I’ve grown to love her whimsy.
